SCHOLAR OF THE YEAR:
Congratulations
to Carrie Caswell and Alexander Zygmunt. Carrie and Alexander have been
selected as our school’s recipients of the Scholar of the Year Award. The award
is sponsored by Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit #19 (NEIU) and the
University of Scranton’s Department of Communications. The award is given to
high school seniors exhibiting academic excellence in each high school of the
twenty school districts the NEIU covers. An interview of Carrie, Alexander and
Mr. Marcks will air on radio station WUSR (99.5 FM) on Sunday, January 6th
at 2:00 PM.
THE UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON – FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP:
The Director of Financial Aid at the University of
Scranton will conduct an on-campus Financial Aid Workshop for local accepted
students. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, January 22nd from
7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in Brennan Hall. The snow date is Monday, January 28th.
In addition to reviewing the FAFSA online worksheet, the presentation will
include information on the University of Scranton’s financial aid programs and
awards for local students, need based assistance program, state & federal
programs, student & parent loans and financing options.
SCHOLARSHIPS:
- Mount
St. Mary’s University – Bishop
Joseph F. Martino Scholarship – The purpose of the scholarship is to
afford Bishop Martino with the opportunity to recognize a Catholic student
from the Diocese of Scranton with a distinctive scholarship to attend
Mount St. Mary’s University. The recipient will be selected by the Bishop
and will receive a $15,000 annual scholarship to attend the Mount. To
apply a student must be accepted to the university, have at least a 3.0
GPA, a minimum SAT critical reading and math composite score of 1100 or
ACT composite of 24 and a 500-word essay along with a scholarship
application. To obtain an application visit msmary.edu/bishop or call
1-800-448-4347. The deadline is February 1st.
- Arcadia
University – Arcadia University
awards a number of merit-based scholarships. High school seniors are
rewarded for academic excellence, outstanding leadership and community and
volunteer service. Seniors are encouraged to apply for admission by
January 15th for priority consideration.
- Alvernia
College – Alvernia College
awards graduates of Catholic high schools that do not receive a merit
–based scholarship, a $4,000 PACE award (Partners in Catholic Education)
for each of four years in attendance.
- AXA
Achievement Community Scholarship
– Winners, known as AXA achievers, must demonstrate ambition and drive,
determination to set and reach goals, ability to succeed in college and
respect for self, family and community. Every AXA branch office
distributes up to twelve $2,000 AXA Achievement Scholarships. Applications
are available to download at axa-achievement.com. The deadline is February
15th.
- Annually for the past seven years, the Lehigh
Valley Section of the Society of Women Engineers has awarded scholarships
with a value up to $10,000 to female students graduating from area high
schools, our zip code is included, and enrolling in engineering at a
college or university. The criteria for selection are academic
achievement, leadership, teamwork, activities and an essay. Applications
are available in the guidance office. Completed applications must be
postmarked by February 22nd.
